If the Pick-and-Place machine is the brain of the SMT line, the Nozzle is its hand. Despite being small, the nozzle is a high-precision tool that directly touches every component. Choosing the right nozzle is the difference between a perfect board and a costly production failure.
1. How It Works: The Power of Vacuum
An SMT nozzle uses vacuum suction to pick up components from the feeder and hold them securely until they are placed on the PCB. A perfect seal is required; even a microscopic gap can cause a "component fly" (where the part drops) or "tombstoning" (where the part stands upright on the board).
2. Material Matters: From Steel to Ceramics
Different components require different nozzle materials:
- Tungsten Steel: Durable and common for standard resistors and capacitors.
- Ceramic: Anti-static and highly resistant to wear, ideal for sensitive ICs.
- Diamond-Coated: Used for ultra-high-speed lines to prevent the nozzle tip from deforming over millions of cycles.
- Rubber/Plastic Tips: Soft-touch tips used for delicate or oddly shaped components like connectors and LEDs to prevent surface damage.

Nozzles are consumable items, but their lifespan depends on care.
- Clogging: Solder paste and dust can block the vacuum hole.
